We are grateful to St Mary's Church, Henham for permission to film the graves. We are again very grateful to Dave Cutts for his enhanced filming. I can now read some of them for the first time. Those unable to travel within the UK and from overseas can now view and read their families headstones from their own homes.

In the following table we've allocated a number to each plot followed by the grave details and a thumbnail image (you can click on the thumbnail to access a much larger version). We created the plot numbers so please don't confuse them with any found in church records. Because of the number of graves, we've made 3 webpages so those in the southern section, ie to the left of the church, are on this page. Those to the right are at - Gravestones pt. 2 and Gravestones pt. 3

Canning Family Gravestones in Henham Churchyard

I can thank Colin Reed for the following information -

There are eight headstones in a line in front of the large white Canning tomb. Starting with number 1 at the north, the inscriptions on them (as far as I have been able to read them) are as follows - now beneath each image

026
027
028
026 - In memory of Ann Canning late of Elsenham daughter of William Canning who departed this life October 21 1811 aged 31 Years (additional comment: this lady is probably the daughter of the William on headstone 1 – though I thought she was born in 1777. Perhaps I misread her age on the gravestone) 027 -In memory of Mary relict of Mr John Canning who departed this life the 9 of December 1801 aged 51 years (additional comment: I believe this to be Mary nee Guiver, the widow of John Canning) 028 - In memory of Mr John Canning who died the 29 of January 1799 aged 42 years. Also of Mary Ann Canning who died the 8th of July 17?? (additional comment: John Canning was the son of the William on headstone 5, and he married Mary Guiver.  I cannot be sure about Mary Ann – William and Mary (see headstone 5) had a daughter Ann Canning, born 1763, and it could be her (in other words, John’s sister)

029 030 031
029 - To the memory of William Canning ?? who departed this life the 11th of September 1766 Aetatis suae 48  Memento mori (additional comment: he was the father of the William on headstone 1, and he married Ann Cole) 030 - In memory of Mrs Ann Canning who died the 27th of June in the year of our Lord 1793 aged 63 years (additional comment: she was probably the wife of the William on headstone 5) 031 - Here lies the body of Elizabeth the wife of William Canning of Rickling in Essex late of Henham who departed this life Feb 12th 1770 aged 82 years (additional comment: she was the wife of the William on headstone 2)

032 033 034
032 - Here lies the body of Will Canning Gent late of Rickling who departed this life Feb 1? 17?? Aged 73 years. Memento mori (additional comment: I believe he died in 1775.
