 The War Memorials - Henham
As you drive through Henham, a small war memorials stands in the middle of the village. However, these are not the only men and women who gave their lives for their country. The War Memorial was unveiled in March 1921.

At St Mary the Virgin Church, there are a further two War Memorials. The interesting point is that their are more names on the one within the church than on the war memorial, it is believed than Stanley Fisher and Albert Camp died after 11 November 1918.
There are two rolls of honours. one is wooden commemorating the Great War (1914-1918), the second commemorates the people who served their country in 1939-1945 war. There are names on the wooden one which are now unreadable, if anyone can shed some light onto the people named on the board I would appreciate it. The wooden roll of honour will be going for restoration soon. Click on the images too enlarge. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is useful for identifying family members who bravely gave their lives in the service of the country.

Second World War 1939 -1945
|
| I believed that there was only one resident who died in the Second World War from Henham, however, there is a pilot buried in the Churchyard, who had married a Henham girl, his name is Horatio James Rennie Dunn. |
 |
NAPIER, Robert David, Sub-Lieutenant (A), Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, on board H.M.S. Ruler in the Pacific Ocean, died age 21, Son of Henry Andrew Muter Napier and Catherine Frances Sydney Napier, of Henham, Essex. |
 |
DUNN, Horatio James Rennie, Pilot Officer, 33411 RAF, 87 Sqdn, died age 23, son of George Dunn and of Rose Hannah Dunn (nee Pearce), of Filton Bristol; husband of Denise Dunn (nee Foster).
On November 10th 1939 Horatio was flying a No. 87 Sqdn RAF Hurricane Mk. 1 (Serial no. L1619 - LK°P) which ran out of fuel after having engaged a Dornier over Tourcoing, and force-landed in the Mouscron area, slightly damaging the plane. Dunn was apprehended and imprisoned near Antwerp, escaping a few weeks before the outbreak of war. He would be killed in Yorkshire on June 1, 1940 after a scramble from RAF Air Base Church Fenton, piloting a spitfire.
