Lost Footpaths

1848 15th Dec. Chelmsford Chronicle – the intention to discontinue and stoppage up, from and after the 9th day of April next of 14 public footpaths (see table below) following the inclosure.

Footpaths to be closed – Newspaper article
  1. That the Public Footway, commencing at Prison Green, at the west corner of the Orchard, belonging to W.C. Smith, Esq. numbered on Map 603, and proceeding over a Field called Cannons to Outfield Common, and thence over the said Common to the north corner of Old Ley.
  2. Also that the Public Footway and Bridleway, commencing at the south-west corner of Sandhill Common, at Cat’s Lane, and proceeding over the said Common and Outfield Common, to the south-west corner of Seven Acres, and thence to Prison Green, at the south corner of a Garden, No.587
  3. Also that the Public Footway commencing at the road leading from Elsenham to Broxted, nearly opposite Prison or Pledgdon Hall, at the corner of the Hop Ground and proceeding over Home Field to a gate leading into Outfield Common, and thence between Outfield and Sandhill Commons to an old inclosure, known as Reedings, belonging to Mr. William Mumford
  4. Also that the Public Footway, commencing at the south-east corner of Town Field, belonging to Mr. John Mumford, and proceeding over Platt’s Common to a stile in the Great Pasture, and thence over the west side of the said Pasture to the south-west corner thereof.
  5. Also that the Public Footway, commencing at or near the north-west corner of Dickett’s Pasture, near the Star Public House, and proceeding over the said Pasture, Great Pea Croft, Little Pea Croft, and Town Field, to the south-east corner of the same, and thence over Platt’s Common to a stile at the north-west corner of Little Pasture, No.440, and thence across the said pasture into Hagbush, and thence across the west side thereof into the road from Stansted to Thaxted.
  6. Also that the Public Footway, branching out of the last described, at a stile where the same crosses into Little Pasture, and proceeding on the west and north sides of Hagbush to the north-east corner thereof.
  7. Also that the Public Footway, branching out of the Footway, No.4, in Platt’s Common, and proceeding over the said Common by the pond to the Mill Road.
  8. Also that the Public Footway, commencing at the north-west corner of Town Field, belonging to Mr. John Mumford, and proceeding on the west side of the same field to the south-west corner thereof.
  9. Also that the Public Footway, commencing at the south-east corner of Hither Howe, and proceeding on the north side of Great Hide Common to the Mill Road.
  10. Also that the Public Footway, branching out of the last described, at the south-east corner of the Hither Howe, and then proceeding across Great Hide Common to the north-east corner of Henham Brooms.
  11. Also that the Public Footway, commencing at the north-east corner of Henham Brooms, and proceeding over Small Hide Common to the south-west corner of the same, thence over the west side of an old inclosure of Mr. William Mumford to and over a stile into an old inclosure of Messrs. Gibson, and thence to and through the yard of the Crown Public House to the public road.
  12. Also that the Public Footway, commencing at the north-east corner of Henham Brooms, and proceeding across ancient inclosures, Nos. 455,459, and 467, to the public road at the north-west corner of the garden at Henham Broom Farm homestead.
  13. Also that the Public Footway, branching out of the Footway, No.10, in Great Hide Common, and proceeding over the said Common to the public road from Old Mead Farm to Elsenham.
  14. And the Public Footway, branching out of the Footway, No.9, and proceeding over Howe Common to the north side thereof, and thence unto Deadman’s Lane.
