HAMMOND Arthur, Private, died 10/10/1917 aged 22. Enlisted 08/09/1914 Bishops Stortford. Service no. 8315 1st Battalion East Surrey Regiment. Remembered at Tyne Cot Memorial. Son of Mrs. Emma Jane Woodcock of Old Mead Cottages Henham. Arthur along with his brother Walter were born in Berden, Essex, they both died exactly one year apart. At the outbreak of war their mother was widowed and living at Henham, their father was Daniel Hammond. Arthur enlisted when he was 19 years and 2 months old, he was employed as a horsekeeper.
His left thigh was wounded by gunshot in action and was transported back to England on 5 July 1916. He remained in England until 26 September 1916, when he was posted back to the front line.
He was killed around the 10 October 1917. This is the date he was reported missing in action.
Arthur and his brother had one older brother Ernest W Hammond (born c 1887), two full blood sisters, Elizabeth B. Hammond (born c 1889) and Agnus Maud Hammond (born c 1891), there are references to half-blood brothers Charles (born c 1902) and William Woodcock (born c 1906) and a half blood sister Florence Woodcock (born c 1910).
Elizabeth married Albert Crisp c. 1906 and moved to King Street, Bishops Stortford where they hadtwo children by the census of 1911, Dorothy and Albert.
