We are very grateful to the owners of Forge Cottage for their generosity in allowing us to make over 70 images from numerous documents relating primarily to the history of the property and its occupants.
The 5th lot of documents is an insurance policy dated the 29 September 1878. The insured is Henry Gardiner, grocer of Henham. The policy refers to a dwelling house and brewhouse annexe both built of timber and tiled; a blacksmith’s shop with forge securely built of brick; a timber barn and thatched and situated about 20 yards from the blacksmith’s shop. The annual premium was eleven shillings and the total cover was for £ 300. The policy specified that it would be void if any steam power was used in the brewhouse or any…? fired in said blacksmith’s shop.
