Thomas George Wilson Service Record

WILSON Thomas George, Sergeant died 17/06/1917, aged 28. Enlisted Saffron Walden, service no. 56002, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 10th Battalion. Formerly 13214, Essex Regiment. Remembered at Arras Memorial. Son of Charles and Mary Wilson of High St. Newport Essex, according to the 1901 census he was born in Henham.

From the battalion diary:

On the 13th June the battalion moved up to trenches near Monchy and, under heavy shelling, relieved the 1st Gordon Highlanders.
On the 14th the 76th Bde attacked and took their objective, Hook and Long Trenches.
On the 15th, at 2.15 am the enemy made a strong counter-attack on the positions taken off them but were repulsed. The Bde retained the positions with the exception of one advanced post.
On the 16th there was heavy hostile shelling.
On the 17th the 76th Bde made an unsuccessful attempt to retake the advanced post. There was heavy shelling.
8 Killed, 16 Wounded. He is amongst those killed.
