Walter Barltrop Service Record

BARLTROP Walter, Private, aged 21 years 4 months at enlistment at London on 21 August 1897, service no L/12768 9 Lancers Queens Regiment. He retired 26 Nov 1919 after serving 22 years 95 days. He was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. As part of his record it shows he was a prisoner of war in 1917. During his career he receives a number of promotions and ends his career as Acting/Regimental Sergeant Major.

His father was George Barltrop of Henham. He marries Margaret Clements, Old Charlton, 23 October 1915 and resides at 68 Avonmore Road, Kensington, W14 from 19 Aug 1919. He served in Ireland, India and South Africa prior to the outbreak of the war. Recorded as being at The Barracks, Ballincollig, Ireland 22nd. Feb 1899, Eastern Cavalry Depot 2nd Mar. 1916, and Canterbury Barracks 13th Nov 1919.

Prior to joining he was a grocer’s assistant, at Holland & Barrett in Bishops Stortford for 7 years.
